Lei Kūpeʻe

Kūpeʻe: An edible marine snail (Nerita polita); the shells were used as adornments, the rare ones saved for the chiefs.  Varieties included, ānuenue, ʻeleʻele, kāniʻo, mahiole, palaoa (ivory) rare, puna (rare), and ʻula (Hawaiian Dictionary)

Maui Kūpeʻe gathered on the shores of our home and hand made by Kumu Kaponoʻai Molitau.  This Kūpeʻe is a variety known as kūpeʻe ʻeleʻele due to its dark gray black color.  There are many variety of kūpeʻe found throughout Hawaiʻi and the rarest kinds would be saved for the aliʻi as their color and distinct shapes were kept for their high chiefs.  We invite you to add these beautiful lei kūpeʻe ʻeleʻele to your collection of lei and enjoy them for years to come.
