The design captures the natural connection that Hawaiian islanders have to the ocean and the islands. Bound to the land, freed by the ocean. The ocean (makai) is depicted in a style that is loose and free, while the land (mauka) is more rigid and firm. Symbols of birds and manta rays are incorporated into the design.
